Beebe takes a shot at film awards

The Australian Dion Beebe has zoomed into Oscar calculations with a nomination for the American Society of Cinematographers' Outstanding Achievement Awards.The Brisbane-born cinematographer, who won an Academy Award for Memoirs of a Geisha four years ago, has been nominated for the musical Nine.Raised in South Africa, Beebe trained at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School in Sydney. His first Oscar nomination was for the musical Chicago in 2003.At next month's ASC awards, he will be up against an international field: Mauro Fiore of Italy for Avatar, Christian Berger of Austria for The White Ribbon, Barry Ackroyd of Britain for The Hurt Locker and the American Robert Richardson for Inglourious Basterds.Last year's winner, Anthony Dod Mantle for Slumdog Millionaire, went on to collect the Oscar.Beebe, whose other movies include In the Cut, Collateral and Miami Vice, is due to shoot The Green Lantern next.The comic book movie was originally to be shot in Sydney, but because of the rising value of the dollar will now shoot in Louisiana from March. To be directed by Martin Campbell (GoldenEye, Casino Royale), it will star Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively.In other movie news, the Hollywood studio Columbia has scrapped Spider-Man 4 after parting ways with the director Sam Raimi and star Tobey Maguire. It now plans to reboot the franchise by taking the character back to high school.
