Darwin comes alive in museum musicCharles Darwin's Origin of Species is the inspiration for a musical performance at the Australian Museum on Thursday. The Origin Cycle takes passages from Darwin's famous book and sets them to music by the Australian composers Barry Conyngham, Elliott Gyger, Elena Kats-Chernin, Kate Neal, Rosalind Page, Paul Stanhope, Nicholas Vines and Dan Walker. Passages include the book's final invocation of "grandeur in this view of life". The pieces will be performed by Ensemble Offspring and the soprano Jane Sheldon in the museum foyer from 7pm.School jobMichael Smellie has been appointed chairman of the Australian Film, Television and Radio School Council. His three-year term was announced by the federal Arts Minister, Peter Garrett, yesterday. Mr Smellie, a former executive at the music companies Sony BMG and Polygram, replaces Peter Ivany.Downe and upMark Trevorrow, the alter ego of Bob Downe, is halfway through a series of cabaret shows at the Supper Club in the Oxford Hotel, Taylor Square. Trevorrow is performing his mixture of songs, comedy and surprise celebrity guests every Wednesday this month. The show starts at 8.30pm.
