Film lessonsSteven Soderbergh will give a seminar and masterclass on film direction in Sydney on Saturday, November 21. Presented by the Australian Directors Guild and the visual effects company Animal Logic, the event is being staged while the American is directing Tot Mom for the Sydney Theatre Company. The morning seminar will be a theatre-style presentation with a question and answer session and is open to the public. In the afternoon, 12 mid-career directors will take part in a practical masterclass exploring directing actors/action, shooting and editing. The Australian Film Television and Radio School at Moore Park is providing facilities for the event. Soderbergh's films include Traffic, Erin Brockovich and Ocean's Eleven.Arts on the ABCABC-TV is beefing up its arts coverage, including a new weekly magazine show, Art Nation. Other programs announced at a digital arts conference yesterday include the six-part Bush Slam, hosted by H.G. Nelson and charting a poetry slam competition; Opera Australia's commission Bliss, composed by Brett Dean, based on the Peter Carey novel and staged by Neil Armfield, on ABC2 Live Presents; and Bob Connolly's Making Music, which follows high school students for 18 months as they prepare for a classical music concert at the Opera House.
